On July 27, 2026, Hurricane Genevieve became the first Category 5 storm in the Eastern Pacific Ocean in 2026. At that time, the storm’s maximum sustained winds reached 160 miles per hour (257 km/h), according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and the minimum central pressure reached 925 millibars. Genevieve was located about 530 miles (855 km) south southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.
Later that same day, the storm began to weaken as it faced increasingly cooler sea surface temperatures and stronger wind shear. By July 29, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image, Hurricane Genevieve was a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of about 130 miles per hour (215 km/h). It was located about 950 miles west southwest of the southern tip of Baja California and was moving towards the west northwest at 9 miles per hour (15 km/h), according to the NHC.
Genevieve continued to weaken throughout July 29, with maximum sustained winds dropping to about 100 miles per hour (155 km/h) and minimum central pressure rising to 970 millibars by late in the evening. The storm’s center was located about 705 miles (1,135 km) west southwest of the southern tip of Baja California and it continued to travel away from land.
The NHC forecasts that Genevieve will likely continue to maintain its current strength for at least a short time as it follows its current track towards to west northwest and away from land. It is expected to weaken and become post-tropical over open ocean within the next 5-6 days.
