Lake Superior

On August 13, 2026, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image featuring both Lake Nipigon and Lake Superior.

The largest of the five North American Great Lakes, Lake Superior measures approximately 160 miles (257 km) wide and 350 miles (563 km) in length. The average depth is about 483 feet (147 meters), but the deepest point plunges to about 1,332 feet (406 meters). The large lake sprawls across the boundary between Canada (north) and the United States (south). This means that Superior’s shores belong to the province of Ontario, Canada, as well as the U.S. states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota.

Located about 70 miles (120 km) northeast of Lake Superiors shore, Lake Nipigon is the largest lake contained entirely within Ontario, measuring about 70 miles (112.6 km) by 50 miles (80.5 km). A fisherman’s paradise, the lake hosts a thriving population of trophy brook trout, feisty lake trout, large walleye, and massive northern pike. The nearly-round lake sports tall cliffs as well as unusual gray-green tinted beaches. The color is due to large deposits of pyroxene sand, a dark sediment of volcanic origin.
