A spate of storms dumped heavy snow across portions of Patagonia in the last weeks of winter, 2026. By August 29, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this false-color image of Argentina, ski resorts in Andean Chile and Argentina were gleefully extending their seasons as they reported up to 31 inches (78.7 cm) of snowpack. Forecasts called for snow to continue through the arrival of meteorological spring on September 1 and possibly into the next week.
In this type of false-color image, snow and ice appear bright electric blue, vegetation is green, open land looks tan, and liquid water is dark blue. Clouds are often white, but very cold clouds filled with ice crystals often appear electric blue, as in this image.
Significant snow is evident atop the Andes mountains (west) while the valleys remain green with vegetation. Snow also sweeps down the foothills and over the plains of Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. Snow-laden cloud hovers over the portions of the Andes with additional icy clouds reaching the Atlantic Ocean.
