Fires in Europe

Sweltering summer weather, prolonged drought, and strong, shifting winds set the stage for an outbreak of wildfires across Bosnia and Herzegovina since early August 2026. According to a report published on ReliefWeb on September 7, 2026, “the situation is particularly severe in Herzegovina, where NASA fire-detection systems recorded 1,292 hotspots in just the first thirteen days of August—three times more than in the same period last year.” Although no deaths have yet been reported due to the fires, several buildings have been damaged or destroyed. At least one fire has crossed from Bosnia and Herzegovina into Croatia.

On September 8, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image of dense smoke rising from dozens of fires along the Dinaric Alps, primarily in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Actively burning fires are marked by red “hotspots”, but many of these are obscured by the extremely dense smoke. Smoke blows across the Dalmatian Coast and over the Adriatic Sea.
