September 28, 2026 - Autumn Colors in Bristol Bay

Bristol Bay

Jewel-toned colors brighten the waters of Bristol Bay, Alaska as fall colors brighten the surrounding landscape in late September 2026. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image on September 23.

Swirling green and tan mark areas of suspended sediment in the Bay waters and may also reveal floating blooms of phytoplankton—microscopic plant-like organisms that live in these waters in relatively small numbers year-round. When conditions are favorable, they can reproduce explosively to create huge floating colonies that can be seen from space.
