October 2, 2026 - Snow on the Tibetan Plateau

Tibetan Plateau

An early winter storm moved over the western Tibetan Plateau between September 25-27, 2026, filling the skies with cloud and leaving heavy snow in its wake. When skies fully cleared on September 29, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image of the fresh snow draped over the Tibetan Plateau.

According to the Explore Tibet website, heavy snow forced the closure of the kora, the pilgrimage circuit around Mount Kailash region in Ngari, western Tibet region. Several flights to the region were also cancelled.
