Lake Superior

A nearly cloud-free summer day allowed the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite to acquire a beautiful true-color image of Lake Superior on July 30, 2019.

Lake Superior is the largest of North America’s Great Lakes, spanning about 31,700 square miles (82,103 square kilometers). The South Carolina-sized lake is shared by Ontario, Canada and the U.S. states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. An important natural resource, used for such needs as transportation, recreation, and tourism, it is also the only one of the Great Lakes to have an annual dual-country celebration in honor of the “Big Lake wonderful” found along all four shores. Started in 1990 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Lake Superior Day falls on the third Sunday each July.
