Haze over India and Bangladesh

Haze hugs the Himalaya Mountains in this image captured by the MODIS on the Terra satellite on January 4, 2007. In the south, thick brown sediment is visible at the mouth of the Ganges River. During the Northern Hemisphere winter, haze often collects at the base of the mountains, trapped there in part by weather systems.

The countries of Nepal, India, and Bangladesh are shown in this scene. Bangladesh is near the mouth of the Ganges and is surrounded on both sides by India. Nepal is to the north, running along the mountains. Black lines denote country borders.
