Iceland

The clouds parted over Iceland on April 25, 2016, allowing the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Aqua satellite to capture this true-color image of the island.

Iceland remains covered in a blanket of white well into spring, as can be seen in this image. Over 11% of the island is covered with glaciers and ice-caps year-round, primarily in the higher elevations and Central Highlands. The coastal areas remain ice-free throughout the year, thanks to moderating winds from the warm North Atlantic Current which flows near the southern western and eastern coasts.
