April 27, 2024 - Dust over Eastern Europe

Dust

A massive cloud of dust blew from Northern Africa in late April 2024, turning the skies over Eastern Europe orange. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image on April 24 that captured dust over Ukraine (north) the Black Sea (center) and Turkey (south).

The dust, a light sandy brown color in contrast to the white clouds, was first evident on satellite images over northeastern Libya on April 22. It moved towards Greece on April 23, and then was visible over Ukraine on April 24.

The dust was carried on very hot, dry winds blowing northward from the Sahara Desert. For example, the town of Cukurova, Turkey hit a sweltering 102.6°F (39.2°C)—Turkey’s hottest April temperature on record.
