The Colorado Rocky Mountains were showing the first hints of fall—and winter—on September 25, 2024, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image.
The bright yellow, golds, and orange tones of aspen leaves can be seen in the high country. They usually begin to turn in mid-September and will become more widespread and vibrant through October. Several peaks also wear bright white, thanks to the first snow of the season, which fell in early September. Heavy snow typically falls in the high country later in the year, with most Colorado ski reports opening in November and December.
