Fires in Central Chile

Fires dot the landscape of central Chile in this image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on January 21, 2009. The Pacific Ocean is to the west of Chile. The Andes Mountain range, covered with summer foliage, runsthrough Chile on the right side of the image.

The fires visible are marked with red dots. Several of them have visible smoke plumes, one in particular is quite large. It is likely that the smaller fires are agricultural, possibly from brush-clearing. The larger fire and smoke plume may be from a wild fire.
