Grande Terre New Caledonia

Part of the French territory of New Caledonia is featured in this image, captured by the MODIS on the Terra satellite on July 13, 2009. New Caledonia is located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, about 1500 km from Australia and 1700 km from new Zealand. It has one main island called Grande Terre, which is long and narrow.

A large barrier reef (the 2nd largest after Australia's Great Barrier reef) surrounds Grande Terre and extends beyond it, to form a lagoon. Though Grande Terre is the main island, New Caledonia also has others, including the Isle of Pines, the Loyalty Islands, Walpole Island, and the Huon, Chesterfield and Belep groups.
