Beneath the cloud cover in this image captured by the MODIS on the
Terra satellite on June 2, 2010 are the outer Aleutian Islands. The
Aleutians are a chain of islands that extend from Alaska toward the
Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia.
The clouds trailing off the islands make interesting vortex patterns. The vortices are being formed by wind-driven clouds interacting with
the highest points of the islands. The wind causes the clouds to flow around in the large, spinning eddies you see here.
