August 16, 2013 - Floods in Myanmar

Myanmar’s Irrawady and Chirtdwin Rivers were swollen with monsoon rains when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this false-color image on August 2, 2013. With this color scheme, clouds are light blue, vegetation appears bright green, non-vegetated land appears tan and river water appears dark blue. Both the Chirtdwin River (northwest) and the Irrawady into which it flows are swollen with monsoonal water.
Scrolling over this top image reveals an additional false-color image captured when the MODIS on the Aqua satellite passed over the region on June 15, 2013, at the beginning of the monsoon season.
While floods happen regularly during the summer monsoon, the 2013 floods have forced more than 30,000 people from their homes in the Kayin state, southeast of the area shown in this image. The floods in Kayin are not visible because of persistent clouds.
