March 23, 2018 - Sweden

Sweden

Southern Sweden was wearing winter white as the spring equinox approached in March 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image of Sweden on March 18. The first day of spring, marked by the spring (vernal) equinox fell on March 21.

Several features mark the transition from winter to spring in this scene. The most obvious mark of winter is the fresh snowfall across the region. In addition, filigrees of sea ice remain floating in the Gulf of Bothnia off the northeastern coast and the southern section of Lake Vanern remains frozen over. In contrast, the large amount of open water on Lake Vanern (the largest lake) and Lake Vattern is evidence of warming temperatures.
