Clouds banking along Peru Coastline

Long fingers of fog pushed onto Peru’s Pacific Coast in late June 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the scene on June 20.

A large bank of marine stratocumulus cloud shrouds the blue ocean waters. These low-level clouds – also known as fog – are persistent off the coast of Peru, especially in the winter and early spring. Because the marine clouds lie just a few hundred meters above the ground, the tall Andes Mountains block their movement inland. The tendrils of fog trace the low river valleys that lie between the steep mountains.
