On January 21, 2020, NASA’s Aqua satellite passed over the southwestern Persian Gulf, allowing the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to acquire a true-color image of tan land and jewel-toned swirls of sediment in the deep blue water.
The large Qatar Peninsula is home to the country of Qatar. After the discovery of oil in 1937 and the end of World War II, development began in earnest. Once a small fishing village, the city of Doha now has a population of over 1.8 million, with more than 80% of the population of the country living in or just outside of Doha.
The island nation of Bahrain sits north of Qatar. Roughly 3.5 times the size of Washington, D.C., Bahrain is connected to Saudi Arabia, to the west, by the 16 mi (25 km) King Fahd Causeway. Historically, Bahrain has been famous for its pearl fisheries since ancient times. Beautiful and valuable pearls can still be harvested in the warm Gulf waters, and several tourist services can give visitors the chance to try their hand at this ancient practice.
