Numerous fires (marked with red dots) are burning in Eastern Europe, likely as a result of regional agricultural practices. The MODIS on the Terra satellite captured this image on August 16, 2008.
The body of water on the lower right is the Sea of Azov, which is the world's shallowest sea. Further west is the Black Sea - the two bodies of water are linked by the Strait of Kerch. The Sea of Azov is bordered by Ukraine to the northwest, west and southwest and by Russia to the northeast, east, and southeast. The Black Sea lies between Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine. The large river at the center of the image is the Dnipro River, which flows into the Black Sea.
