September 11, 2008 - Hurricane Ike over Cuba

Hurricane Ike over Cuba

This image, captured by the MODIS on the Terra satellite, shows Hurricane Ike over Cuba on September 9, 2008. Ike traveled right along the length of Cuba, striking the eastern part of the island on the 8th. High winds and rain caused a great deal of damage to houses, property and crops, as well as four reported deaths.

Ike left Cuba as a borderline Category 1 storm, but the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico are causing the storm to increase in power and intensity as it heads towards the Texas coast. It is possible for Ike to grow into a Category 3 storm before making landfall again. Forecasters believe the storm will likely hit Texas or Northern Mexico on the 13th.
