July 26, 2017 - Ireland

The island of Ireland was awash in its annual cloak of emerald green in mid-July 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image on July 17.

The intense green vegetation of Ireland owes its verdant color to moderate temperatures and moist air. Ireland receives between 29 and 78 inches (750 and 2000 mm) of rain per year, with the higher rainfall in the west and in the mountains. The rain often takes the form of light showers, giving rise to the terms “Irish mist” and “soft weather” common in many areas. Frequent rain means Ireland is often hidden under cloud or fog, so acquiring a cloud-free view of the island, while not rare, can be difficult.
