On January 27, 2018, Tropical Cyclone Cebile formed in the southwest Indian Ocean southeast of Diego Garcia. By January 31, Tropical Cyclone Cebile became the most powerful tropical cyclone to form in the southern hemisphere this year. Maximum sustained wind speeds were estimated at 138 mph (222 km/h) early in the day, making Cebile the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Tropical Cyclone Cebile at near-peak strength on January 31. At that time, the system sported a nearly-clear eye with a sharply demarcated eyewall and deep convective banding.
Near the time this image was captured, the storm was centered near 15.6 degrees south longitude and 77.1 degrees east latitude, approximately 583 nautical miles south-southeast of Diego Garcia and was tracking northwestward at about 4. 6 mph (7.4 km/h).
Tropical Cyclone Cebile remained in warm waters with little wind shear until February 1 when conditions became increasingly difficult. It then began to weaken. On February 6, fighting wind shear and cooler ocean waters, Cebile was beginning to transition to a subtropical cyclone. On the evening of February 7, Tropical Cyclone Cebile was located approximately 1,436 miles (2,311 km) south-southeast of Diego Garcia. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center reported that the system was continuing to slowly weaken, and anticipates dissipation by February 9.
