True to form, the month of March roared in like a lion, with multiple storms across the United States, and in particular the Northeast, in the first two weeks of the month. On March 8, 2018, strong winds and snow was battering New England and parts of the Mid-Atlantic States while windy, wild weather covered much of the eastern half of the U.S.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of clouds across much of the eastern United States on March 8.
Clouds swirl from eastern Illinois across Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, western Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York. Additional clouds hang over the Atlantic Ocean off the coasts of North Carolina and South Carolina.
In the southeast, where the skies are clear, numerous red hotspots and smoke mark actively burning fires. Such fires are common in this region in the springtime and are typically prescribed burns used to manage agricultural and forest land.
