Dust off West Africa

Strong winds carried a broad cloud of dust off of western Africa in early February 2019. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the sandstorm on February 6.

The dust blows over Western Sahara (north), Mauritania, and Senegal (south) and hangs over the Atlantic Ocean north of the Cape Verde Islands. The veil of dust is so thick that it completely obscures the view of the ocean in much of the image. African dust can be carried across the Atlantic Ocean to reach South America and the Caribbean Sea.
