A cold front swept across Colorado from October 12-13, 2023, bringing the first significant snowfall of the season to the Rocky Mountains. While some unofficial reports boasted of 13-15 inches (33-38 cm) on high peaks, NOAA’s Daily U.S. Snowfall and Snow Depth monitor listed maximum snowfall in Ceaderedge, Delta County at 12 inches (30.5 cm). Other official totals included Crested Butte, Gunnison County, with 10.5 inches (26.7 cm); Winter Park, Grand County with 6.0 inches; and Vail, Eagle County with 5.3 in (13.5 cm).
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of fresh snow atop the Rocky Mountains of Colorado on October 15. The city of Denver, visible as gray pixels, can be seen east of the snow-free Front Range.
