By late September 2024, heavy rain across Cambodia and Laos resulted in widespread flooding and landslides. On September 23, ReliefWeb reported that, according to the World Food Program (WFP) and Cambodia Humanitarian Response Forum (HRF), 53 households had been evacuated, with at least 8,865 people and 1,163 houses affected by floods in Cambodia. The affected provinces included Siem Reap, Kratie, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri, Sihanoukville, and Tbong Khmum, all in central Cambodia. Since that time, rain has continued to fall.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a pair of false-color images that illustrate the flooding on the Mekong River and Tonle Sap in September 2024. This type of image helps separate water, which looks dark blue, from vegetation, which appears bright green. Clouds may show as white or can be tinted with light blue.

The top image was acquired on September 27, after weeks of rainfall and flooding. The Mekong River, which winds in a general north to south direction, is broad and heavily flooded. Tonle Sap, a large lake to the west and connected to the Mekong River also appears extremely large and in high flood stage. Compare this to the second image, acquired on August 19. At that time, before the heavy rainfall swamped the region, Tonle Sap remained within its boundaries. The Mekong River can be seen as a winding ribbon of blue and is well within its banks.
