Dust Storm in Algeria

On February 5, 2025, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of dust blowing across Algeria.

Several cream-colored plumes of dust were driven aloft by strong winds and carried across the country, obscuring the land from view. Most of the dust appears to rise from dry desert northwest of Tassili N’Ajjer, a dark and rugged plateau seen in the southeast corner of the image. The winds were likely created by a strong frontal system moving across the country, as suggested by the clouds to the south of Tassili N’Ajjer.

Dust storms are common in Algeria, as they are across most of the Sahara Desert. They can occur at any time of the year.
