April 26, 2025 - Dust Storm in Chad

Dust Storm in Chad

Gusting winds carried a plume of dust across southwestern Chad in late April 2025. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of a dust storm in progress on April 25.

The bright white plume originates from the Bodele Depression, the lowest point in Chad. As wind flows between the Tibesti and Ennedi Mountains (in the northeast), it picks up speed and sweeps across the dry bowl of the Bodele Depression, picking up dust. This depression is one of the most active sources of wind-blown dust on Earth. The frequent dust storms can occur at any time of the year.
