Amazon River Delta

This stunning true-color image of the Amazon River Delta was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on May 13, 2025.

The Amazon River Delta is formed by the joining of the Amazon River and the Tocantins River (through the Pará River distributary channel) and is located in the Brazilian states of Pará and Amapá. The Amazon River rises in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, more than 3,900 miles (6,300 kilometers) away. As the river courses across South America, it erodes river banks and accepts sediment, rocks, and other debris as runoff, then carries it along. Some of the sediment may be deposited where the Amazon River slows or turns, but most of the sediment burden ends up discharged into the Atlantic Ocean, as can be seen in this image.
