This gorgeous true-color image of King Sound was acquired on June 9, 2025, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite.
King Sound is a large gulf of the Indian Ocean located along the northwestern coast of Western Australia. It is famous for the muddy delta formed where the Fitzroy River spills into the sound and the Sound’s massive tides. The tides can fluctuate between 11-12 meters (36-39 feet), making it the site of the highest tides in Australia and the second highest tides in the world (the Bay of Fundy in Canada has the highest).
The striking contrast between the muddy head of the Sound and the blue waters near the center is a result primarily of sediment stirred up by the massive ties on the shallow edges near the coastline. Sediment carried into the Sound by the Fitzroy and other rivers also contributes to the mud-tinted waters.
