July 31, 2025 - Tropical Cyclone Krosa off of Japan

Typhoon Krosa

Tropical Cyclone Krosa appeared to be taking direct aim at Tokyo, Japan, in this true-color image acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on July 30, 2025. Fortunately, the storm is expected to make a sharp turn to avoid landfall in the coming days.

The cyclone formed near Guam, with the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) issuing a Cyclone Formation Alert on the system on July 23. It strengthened to a Typhoon on July 27 when maximum sustained winds peaked at about 90 miles per hour (145 km/h). Facing unfavorable conditions, including strong wind shear, Krosa began to weaken the next day. The track began to wobble, dipping southward before Krosa stalled and spun nearly in place for several days. At the same time, it weakened to a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of about 45 miles per hour. On July 30, Tropical Cyclone Krosa began to move northward and strengthen.

Near the time the image was acquired, Tropical Cyclone Krosa was carrying maximum sustained winds of about 60 mph (96.5 km/h) and was located roughly 460 miles (south-southeast of Yokosuka, Japan. It was slowly tracking northward at 3.5 miles per hour (5.6 km/h). The tropical storm was kicking up waves as high as 16 feet (4.8 meters).

The JTWC expects that Tropical Cyclone Krosa will continue to travel slowly northwestward towards the southeastern coast of Honshu for the next 48 hours. After that time, developing unfavorable conditions should turn the system to the northeast. Krosa is expected to pass southeast of Honshu between August 1 and August 3, then move away from land.
