A bevy of blazes in British Columbia, Canada continued to pour smoke high into the atmosphere through early September 2025. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of dark smoke sweeping across most of North America on September 4.
This image shows smoke sweeping from Western British Columbia eastward to affect a wide swath more than 3,000 kilometers (1,865 miles) long. Smoke can be seen reaching as far east as western Iowa and Arkansas and as far south as Louisiana.
According to a September 3 report from the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System, British Columbia has seen a 769,669 hectares burned so far this year, which is higher than the 10-year average. The province also has seen 1,160 fires this year, which is lower than the 10-year average but is the highest number of all provinces in 2025. Although the number of fires has been smaller this year in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the burned area in these counties have soared, with more than 3 million and more than 2.1 million hectares burned, respectively.
