November 14, 2025 - Dust over the Mediterranean Sea

Dust over the Mediterranean

Restless winds drew a broad band of Saharan Dust over the Mediterranean Sea in mid-November 2025. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image of the moving dust on November 13. The dust is so thick that it is not only difficult to see much of the western Mediterranean Sea through the wind-born aerosols, but the islands of Mallorca and Minorca are almost completely obscured from view.

Bits of cloud in the northwest corner of the image hint at an active storm located off the western edge of the image. In fact, at the time this image was acquired, Storm Claudia was whipping Portugal and Spain with strong winds and heavy rain. Meteorological agencies in both countries issued warnings for rain, with more than 120 millimeters (4.7 inches) expected to fall in some locations. Claudia is expected to move over the United Kingdom and Ireland on November 14, bringing copious rain and strong, gusting winds.
