Northwestern Algeria

Northwestern Algeria is a land of contrasts, with rugged and rocky ridges of the Atlas Mountains surrounded by soft, shifting sands of the Grand Erg Oriental (a part of the Sahara Desert). Further north, the northwestern part of the country enjoys a warm and well-populated coast along the Mediterranean Sea, contrasting with hot and sparsely populated desert.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image on December 2, 2025. Soft, orange-tinted sand dunes can be easily seen around the rocky Atlas Mountains.
