The Ganges Delta is the largest delta on Earth, spanning more than 100,000 square kilometers (38,610 square miles). The delta stretches along the coast of Bangladesh and a portion of West Bengal, India, where several rivers—primarily the Ganges and Brahmaputra spill into the Bay of Bengal.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) acquired this true-color image of the Ganges Delta on March 3, 2026. The mud-colored river channels spilled both fresh water and sediment into the Bay of Bengal, creating a dramatic color change. The bright green area within the larger delta marks a rich agricultural area. The fertile soils give the region the nickname of “Green Delta”.
