Lake Huron

On March 2, 2026, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) acquired this true-color image of Lake Huron covered in winter’s ice.

Lake Huron’s ice cover hit peak on February 9, after more than a week of bitterly cold air temperatures gripped the region. On that date, the lake was 77 percent covered, according to data from the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), a program coordinated by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). By March 2, warming temperatures had reduced Huron’s ice cover to 68.2 percent—a number that remained well above the average peak coverage of 50 percent.
