Ice melt on eastern Hudson Bay was well underway on May 4, 2026, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image.
The Hudson Bay is the largest northern inland sea on Earth, lying in a massive saucer-shaped basin, surrounded by the uplands of the Canadian Sheild. The Bay filled with water at the retreat of glaciation around 7,500 years ago. The shallow Bay freezes solidly over each winter and thaws by early summer. Ice typically begins to slowly melt in April and Hudson Bay is usually ice-free sometime in June.
