The land surrounding the divided city of Sault Ste. Marie is sometimes called the “Heart of the Great Lakes”. Once the home to the Anishinabek people, the region enjoys the lingering breezes of Lake Superior (northwest), Lake Huron (southeast), and Lake Michigan (southwest). The city has grown around the St. Marys River, with the northern portion part of Ontario, Canada while the southern section belonging to the state of Michigan, in the United States.
On June 1, 2026, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image of the complex but beautiful region between the Great Lakes.
The city of Sault Ste. Marie sits near the center of the image and appears as a large area of gray and tan pixels spreading across the St. Marys River. All the land north of St. Marys River belongs to Ontario while the land to the south is part of the United States.
