Dramatic clouds swirled over the Bering Sea on June 7, 2026, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image. Just as dramatically, several volcanic-origin islands can be seen creating interruptions in the cloud cover. The islands to the west belong to Russia’s Komandorski Islands while the islands stretching across the eastern section of the image, beginning near the center, are the Aleutian Islands of the state of Alaska and belong to the United States.
The Bering Sea covers more than 770,000 square miles (2 million square kilometers) and is bordered on the east and northeast by Alaska, on the west by Russia’s Far East, on the south by the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands and the far north by the Bering Strait. It is a region often covered by cloud and whipped by strong winds.
