The South Fork Fire ignited on June 9, 2026, by lightning striking dry grass in steep terrain in the Soldier Creek Wilderness area near Crawford, Nebraska. Strong winds drove rapid growth, despite early engagement by firefighters. By June 10, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image, the blaze had spread to nearly 9,000 acres.
On the afternoon of June 14, InciWeb Incident Information System reported that the fire had spread to 37,010 acres and was 42 percent contained. More than 500 personnel continue to work the fire. Evacuation orders remain in place for several areas near the South Fork Fire. Fire weather is expected to ease slightly over the next several days, with some passing rain, increasing humidity, and decreasing air temperatures.
