Abstract
Enhanced chlorophyll-a on the west coast of the Maldive Islands in the north Indian Ocean is described as an island mass effect (IME). The phenomenon was first observed in the chlorophyll-a field of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) data on 18 December 2003. This phenomenon was studied with daily and weekly datasets of the winter months of 2003 and 2004. The phenomenon was initiated in November 2003 and continued till March 2004. The satellite sensor derived wind and surface current fields examined along the Maldives indicated their association with the chlorophyll fields of the area. The spatio-temporal distribution of chlorophyll and the change in intensity through different channels of the Maldive Islands are discussed with the westward flow of the north equatorial current (NEC) in the Indian Ocean.
