Abstract
In arid zones, rainfall variability could generate changes in agricultural activities because they are dry-farming. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of rainfall variability on land-coverchanges in the south of Buenos Aires province, Argentina. To carry it out, meteorological data from three stations (north, center and south) were analyzed for the period 1966-2014. Besides, the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) was applied to determine Normal, Dry and Wet periods. Land-cover-changes were evaluated from the analysis of Land Cover MODIS products. As a result, a strong correlation was observed between the crop and grassland area and the amount of annual precipitation. The information generated in this study is useful to guide future plans for sustainable land management.
