Abstract
The patterns of seasonal phytoplankton variability in the Caspian Sea were studied using the SeaWiFS and MODIS-Aqua scanners. The chlorophyll a (CHL) concentration in the Caspian Sea was calculated by the regional algorithm developed using the data of in situ measurements in different seasons of the year. Average monthly CHL maps over a twenty-year period and seasonal dynamics diagrams were constructed for the Northern, Middle, and Southern Caspian Sea areas. The seasonal phytoplankton variability were analyzed using the CHL data. The fundamental differences were noted in the seasonal phytoplankton variability in the Northern, Middle, and Southern Caspian areas. The spatial CHL trends throughout the Caspian Sea related to the seasonal succession of phytoplankton were studied. The years with considerable seasonal CHL deviations from the average climatic trends were identified. The possible causes of abnormal phenomena in the development of phytoplankton identified by remote sensing data are considered.
