An approaching cold front triggered an amber alert for health across the United Kingdom as temperatures took a tumble on January 8, 2025. According to UK Weather, Altnaharra, in Sutherland, the most northerly region of the Scottish Highlands, experienced the coldest night in 15 years, with a low of -17.3°C (about 1°F) on January 9. The amber alert continued through January 12, when temperatures began to warm.
Heavy snowfall accompanied the bitter cold across much of the UK, especially in the northern and in the highlands, while rain pelted much of the south and lower elevations. The severe weather triggered school closures in Wales, England, and Scotland and made travel difficult. The country of Ireland also shivered under cold and snow, with reports of travelers temporarily trapped in near-blizzard conditions in Kerry.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image of snow blanketing the United Kingdom on January 10. Northern Ireland and the country of Ireland are hidden under a large bank of cloud.
