Snow Across the Southwest

Cold and stormy weather brought fresh snow to the Western United States in early March 2025. Two storm bands crossed the region from March 6-8, according to data from the NASA Worldview App. The first band brought additional snow primarily to Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, while the second band crossed a bit more southerly, dropping snow in northern New Mexico, Arizona, and Northwestern Texas.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this false-color image of fresh snow in the Western U.S. on March 9. Starting in the northwest corner, and moving roughly clockwise, the states that have been captured in this image include Utah, southern Wyoming, Colorado, western Nebraska, western Oklahoma, western Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.

In this type of image, snow appears electric blue, vegetation is green, open land looks tan, and lakes, rivers, and oceans are dark blue. Cloud usually appears white, but high, cold clouds that contain ice may be tinted with light electric blue.
