Fires in Azerbaijan

A wildfire outbreak in Armenia sent smoke pouring into the skies south of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains in late November 2025. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) acquired this true-color image of the region on Novembe4 24, when hazy skies were at their peak. Each red “hot spot” marks an actively burning fire.

Satellite imagery shows that outbreak began on November 21 with five fires showing up on Terra MODIS on that day. Each fire had increased in size by November 24, and several smaller fires also dotted the area, especially around Lake Sevan and along the Armenian-Azerbaijan border.

According to media reports, the Interior Ministry spokesperson, Narek Sargsian, said that 1,830 firefighters, police officers and forestry workers were battling what appeared to be Armenia’s worst wildfires in years. At least one Armenian helicopter was deployed to drop water on the flames in grasslands and forests. These efforts, plus cooler and cloudy weather, helped quench most of the fires by November 27.
