Fires in the Western United States

This image of the western United States, shows a number of wildfires; it was captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on July 18, 2007. The states shown in this image, from top left, clockwise, are Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and Oregon. Red dots show the locations of active fires - many of the fires have white smoke coming from them as well.

The record heat has made tinder dry and July has seen many fires in this region. Here is an image of the greater area on July 8, showing the numerous fires across the west. Here is the Black Pine 2 Fire in Idaho on July 11, and the fires in Oregon on July 16. This image shows the burned area in Utah, from the Milford Flat Fire on July 17. This image shows the fires in Nevada on July 18.

Today's image shows the Rowland and Elk Mountain Fire, near the Nevada border, on the day before these images were captured on July 19. There are other fires further north in Idaho, near the Oregon border.
