Fires in Montana and Idaho

According to the September 4 report from the National Interagency Fire Center, 24 large fires burned in Montana and Idaho in early September 2007. Many of these fires had been burning in the states’ remote, mountainous terrain for more than a month.

Throughout the summer, the fires occasionally produced thick clouds of smoke that spread across the Great Plains and as far as the East Coast. This image from the MODIS on NASA's Aqua satellite shows the fires (red outlines) on September 3, 2007.
