Fires in Southeastern Russia

The fires (red dots) visible along the shoreline of Russia’s Khabarovsk Province at the upper left of this image are only a few of the forest fires responsible for the river of smoke spreading eastward over the Sea of Okhotsk and the Kamchatka Peninsula (right side of the image) on July 2, 2008.

This true-color image of the area was captured by the MODIS on NASA’s Aqua satellite on July 2. The smoke actually spreads southward as far as Japan.
