October 25, 2008 - The Indus River Basin

India, Afghanistan, and the Himalayas

Pictured in this MODIS Aqua image is the Indus River Basin as it appeared on September 27, 2008. Pakistan is on the left side of the image, India is in the center, and China is on the right. This region is at the foothills of the Himalayas, which run along the top of the image, and fill up the top right corner. The Indus River actually starts in Tibet and runs through India, Pakistan, and ends south of Pakistan at the Arabian Sea.

The Indus River has a large drainage basin that is 332,000 square miles in size, and is mostly contained within Pakistan. The Indus has a number of tributaries. After a 1940s dispute, they were divided up between India and Pakistan, with the waters of the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab to Pakistan and the more eastern Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi Rivers going to India.
